It was a late morning for most of us. Unfortunately, my dad's car had a warning light come on partway through the trip, so he had to take the car in to get checked out. It was a 30 minute trip to the dealer, which then led to a 3 hour wait until they looked at the car. The good news was that they found the problem (a leaking transmission coolant hose). The coolant tank was bone dry and we drove all of the way from Illinois without transmission coolant. Praise the Lord nothing melted, overheated, or seized during the trip! But the bad news was that they wouldn't be able to get a replacement until next Friday. Yeah, a little rubber hose would take them a week to get in. Now, I'm not an automotive engineer, but I've been through Home Depot a few times and have seen nearly every kind of hose imaginable. So, aside from the potential chemical reactions with the coolant, I'm sure they could have done better than a week. But I digress… So, my dad drove to another shop and got to sit there and wait until they looked to see if they had something that would work. Well, minutes turned to hours and at 4:45 (15 minutes before they closed), they told him that they had a hose and that he was good to go. All of the warning lights were gone and he drove back to meet us in time for dinner.
Meanwhile, the rest of us moseyed out of bed between 8 and 10am, and my mom and one of my sisters ran to the grocery store to stock up on foodstuffs. I promptly started my war against the sun. See, we have this hate-hate relationship (yeah, there's no love...). I go outside lathered (yes, lathered) in sunscreen ready to finally defeat my arch-nemesis. However, despite the number on the little plastic bottle (I have used up to SPF 85...does it come higher?), I always end up sunburned. On the first morning of the first day. Without fail. So, I started switching from sunscreen to wearing a shirt - solid protection that won't wash off. Since I was feeling a little daring, I started of with my usual protective sunscreen barrier (SPF 85) and played around in the pool for 2 hrs and then put a shirt on. In the early afternoon, I ran down to the beach with my brothers and played in the surf without my shirt (re-applied sunscreen) for 30 minutes and then put the shirt back on. However, I lost the battle…again. Shoulders and neck were burned. Not as bad as it has been before, but pink nonetheless. So, I began my aloe treatments Day 1. The shirt was out to stay already… Ridiculous…
Anyway, after dinner, my whole family went to see Kung Fu Panda 2. We all enjoy funny movies and couldn't resist seeing this asap. We took up 2 whole rows at the theater (it was a small theater), but there was plenty of room. And we got our popcorn and pop. Across the aisle, there was a family with two little kids. And the little girl dumped an ENTIRE bucket of popcorn on the floor…before the movie even started. Oh, do I remember those days… Anyway, the mom picked up the bucket and told the kids not to eat the popcorn off the floor, and ran to get a refill by showtime.
The preview for Cars 2 was hilarious and had all of us laughing. That's gonna be a great movie. Can't wait. And I have this embarrassing character flaw in that I tend to replay jokes in my head over and over after the joke is over. For the first 5 seconds or so, I'm just laughing along with everyone else. But the replays just keep building up the hilariousness and I keep laughing harder and harder. This inevitably ends with me nearly passing out from not breathing and tears streaming down my face. The exhortations to "BREATHE!!!" from my family members don't do much because I've laughed myself into a frenzy by this point. And it ends with my family looking away and acting like they don't know me.
Anyway, the actual movie was funny and Jack Black is hands-down the perfect actor for the voice of Po, the panda. Having seen "School of Rock" one-too-many times, I can almost see him being Po. He really does resemble an overweight panda! Anyway, I won't spoil the movie, but if you're even the least bit entertained by slapstick comedy, you have to see it. Our collective favorite scene was the one with the Caterpillar costume (you'll just have to see it now!). :) And here's a picture of my little brother outside the movie theater. :)
